How is a sponsor different from a mentor?

By Chris Sanford · Reviewed October 27, 2026

At eXp Realty, sponsor and mentor are different roles, and mixing them up leads to mismatched expectations.

Sponsor

  • The agent you name during the official joining process.
  • Established by your own declaration in that process — not by a form, link, or conversation.
  • What a sponsor personally provides varies by person. Ask for specifics before you name one.

Mentor

  • Transaction guidance for newer agents, provided through brokerage programs.
  • Program details, eligibility, and costs can change — confirm them with eXp's official resources.

Why it matters

  • Your sponsor choice is part of your joining declaration; a mentorship is a program relationship.
  • Don't assume a sponsor will act as a mentor, or that a mentor relationship decides your sponsorship.

If you're already discussing joining with another eXp agent, keep that conversation with them — that's the relationship to build on.
