What should I ask before moving a team?

By Chris Sanford · Reviewed October 27, 2026

A team move is several individual moves happening at once, plus the team's own agreements. Get clarity in writing before anyone announces anything.

Your agreements

  • What does your team agreement say about departure, notice, and client relationships?
  • What does your brokerage independent contractor agreement require?
  • Whose name are the listings in, and what happens to them?

Your people

  • Is each team member making their own decision, or are you deciding for them?
  • What will you tell clients, and when?
  • Who handles pending transactions during the gap?

The destination

  • How does the new brokerage structure teams, and what does that cost?
  • What changes about your branding, signs, and marketing on day one?
  • Who on the new side helps with the transition, specifically?

This is general information, not legal advice. Team agreements and brokerage contracts deserve review by your broker or attorney before you move.
